Hoofers Outing Club History

In 1931, a committee consisting of Professor H. C. Bradley, faculty member of the Union Council [...]; Porter Butts, Union director; Edward Thomas, Union staff; and three students, Henry Baker, Sally Owen Marshall, and Marilla Eggler, was formed to consider establishing a University Skiing and Outing Club. The club, organized as part of the Union, was named the Wisconsin Hoofers.

-- From "The Hoofer History" of January 1959

The Outing Club has a long and storied history. Unfortunately, given that many of our members are passing through UW-Madison as students, not all of this history finds its way into record. This website is, by and large, an attempt to retain some of this history for future Hoofers. The forum, photo gallery, and other interactive features yet to come will provide a past that will always be accessible and available. For now though, here are a few things that have been retained of Outing Club history throughout the years. If you happen to know of other items out there, or would like to provide a story or two for this website, please don't hesitate to contact the Web Chair.

The Whitewater Program of the Wisconsin Hoofers Outing Club
Stories from the early days of whitewater boating in the club as well as a reunion in 2001. Note: This site is hosted at http://www.paddleguides.com/hoofers but duplicated here in case that site goes down.

The Hoofer Outing Club promotes safe, fun, outdoor and social activities that are open to all. This means we promote diversity, try to accommodate people who are disabled (within budget constraints), and do not allow harassment of any kind. For more information, please email our Accessibility Chair.
